Toronto-Area Autopians: Let’s Meet Up On Monday At The Canadian Tire Parking Lot

The trees have leaves, the burgers are on the grill, and car season is officially on in Ontario. Hell, I was grabbing Shawarma the other week and walked past a violinist playing Despacito across from some Mormon missionaries while a Brabus-tweaked G-Class rolled by, so it seems like Toronto is ready to party, and what better way to enjoy an evening than to spend it talking cars with you, dear readers?

Toronto Meet Location

There’s a long weekend coming up, and what better way to cap it off than our first-ever Toronto-area Autopian meet on Monday, May 22? I’ve heard some of you have been looking forward to a Toronto-area meet, so let’s get this plan in action.

  • What: An Autopian meet-up more or less in the middle of the Greater Toronto Area.
  • When: Monday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Where: Canadian Tire parking lot, 1019 Sheppard Ave E (corner of Sheppard and Leslie), North York.
  • Why?: It’s officially car season in Ontario, and a long weekend is a great excuse to get out and make new friends.
  • Who: Everyone who loves cars!
  • How: By car, motorcycle, trike, overlanding rig, RV, heavy truck, hovercraft, rocket-propelled roller skates, or even TTC Line 4 (hop off at Bessarion).

For the sake of convenience, the location I’ve chosen is roughly central in the GTA and on the north side of the 401 for people coming back from the cottage. The Canadian Tire parking lot at Sheppard and Leslie ought to do the trick nicely. The westernmost entrance to the parking lot off of Sheppard has a massive pothole currently covered up by a pylon, but this lot is friendly to low cars so you can bring your homebuilt Lamborghini kit car or slammed Cressida without worrying about scraping. Plus, Canadian Tire is part of Autopian lore, as evidenced by this story.

Ioniq 6 Charging

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to bring my 3-Series, but I might have something better since E90s are everywhere. I’m in a red Hyundai Ioniq 6 right now, so feel free to check out Hyundai’s latest EV. I’d recommend joining the Toronto-area Autopian Readers Facebook Group to stay up-to-date on the meet just in case we need to switch locations or something. I’ll keep this post updated, but last-minute updates are often faster on Facebook.

A two hour 401 ride to end up in Toronto at the close of a holiday weekend, it’s close, it’s tempting, but I vote nope. )-:

Damn, I’m getting home around then. Probably won’t be able to convince the family to go the opposite way from the airport to hang in a parking lot.

Bringing a 90s Thunderbird all the way from Ottawa, I know Autopian fans (Autopes? Autopites?) cannot disappoint. Worst case scenario I get an excuse to drive.

The VW club that I am a part of meets at the Canadian Tire in Milton. I might make the trip with my Taos.

“Meet up at the Canadian Tire parking lot” is also the directions to a street fight or a drug deal.

That’s a two hour drive for me, I could probably justify it if my Tiburon was working haha, I’ve got nothing cool to bring

Just go! I’d drive an appliance to a meet up with other weirdo gearheads if one was only 2 hours away. You might meet your new BWBE*—or just another Tiburon fanatic.

Hopefully you got CT’s permission, we used one in Edmonton as a meeting point for a drive and they called the cops when about 20 cars showed up

Classic CT assholery on display here. I’ve not darkened their door in two decades due to their policies (no receipt? How can we give warranty if we don’t know you bought it here? Um, it says “mastercraft” on it. ). Fuck that. Also, don’t get me started on a sale, that’s advertised at 70% off. It only 10% less than everyone else’s regular price.

Their website used to have a feature where you could be notified when something was on sale, I would use that and pickup behind the store. This local one had some issues with idiots having car meets that involved garbage and lots of hoonage so I can see where they would react. Oddly I havent had too much issue with warranty I even got two Mastercraft torque wrenches replaced under it, now Princess Auto is a different store, I want to power fist them sometimes

Looking at the map, I see a Starbucks and a McDonald’s but no Tim Hortons.

Is that even legal??

It’s North York, there’s more likely to be a bubble tea shop than a Timmy’s. (in this case Peacher Peacher, which is pretty good!)
